Test your pigs for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae

Watch for *Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae *in the pigsty. In fact, animals can contract pneumonia after being infected with this bacterium. The bacteria can be controlled with drugs, but it is better to take preventive actions through management measures. Therefore, check regularly to see if pigs are infected.

Prevention is always better than cure

Once infected, pigs may suffer from pneumonia. Symptoms include fever and a lot of coughing; it is also referred to as a typical mycoplasma cough. Animals spread the bacteria through direct contact (nose-to-nose contact). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae can be tackled with drugs, but they are expensive, while the pigs' growth is reduced and feed conversion decreases. That's why you don't want this bacteria in your yard.

Lavetan tests with the ELISA technique and with a real-time PCR method. The ELISA technique allows us to determine the antibodies. The real-time PCR technique allows us to detect the bacteria in infected pigs.

The bacterium *Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae *(often abbreviated as M. hyo or mycoplasma) is one of the major culprits in pig pneumonia. You can recognize an infected animal by the sick impression it makes such as fever, cough, and decreased appetite. Particularly affected weaned and young pigs tend to show the disease symptoms.
